Competition Turn-in's
I read through many of your comments and I've come to find out that there is an art to how Turn-in's are done. Being a first time competitor, how does someone like me learn what the right way is? I know that going to competitions and helping a team might be the best way, and I hope I can meet up with the Meatheads in April and help them out...but is there another resource that might show pictures or would going to a class be good. Anyway I would like your comments.
Thanks...Jeff

Search all over the internet. Many folks have pics of their turn-ins posted both on this website and on sites of their own. Waste some time surfing - you'll get some great ideas (and not so great). One thing is certain though, you gotta cook to truely learn...otherwise they are just pictures.

Hook up with someone that does this and knows what it's all about and have them get you started. I'm sure you are close enough to KC that there is someone you could hang with at a contest or spend a Saturday practicing.

Practice makes perfect (well almost perfect). I visited two comps and judged one before I competed. Then I surfed and found pics of turn-in boxes and just practiced at home, until we felt confident with what we were doing.
Just remember not to dwell too much on this, scores on appearance help, but taste and texture are the points counted the highest. You'll soon find out what does and doesn't work for you. Good luck!

Check this out. I've been searching it trying to figure out how boxes of "sauced" brisket should look. (I hate sauce on brisket)

Lots of info out there on the net, for starters, try and google "BBQ turn in boxes" then go from there.

you can join me
I think I'm doing a contest in early May in the KC area and then doing the GAB both Invitational and Open. If you just want to see boxes come out and run boxes for me on Saturday and Friday at the GAB. If you want to hang out do dishes and hold racks then join me as a helper.
Email me if you're interested.

When viewing pictures on the web, keep in mind that if the meat is put in the box in a "design", you can get a disqualification for appearance. that will ruin your day. this happened to the team next to us in a contest last year.

You are lucky to be in the cradle of Q' country, so many oppurtunities to take in comps. Sign up for a KCBS Judging class and get an idea what you'll be up against. Find the Brethren with homepages and take in their turn in boxes pics-so many Champions here!

go pickup up a bagful of those styro boxes at Sams and make up some boxes at home. This will help you gauge what looks good and how long it will take to prep a box. One thing that always bothered me in box prep though is that you have to keep it pretty generic looking ..if you get too creative you could get nailed for "marking". But if you looka t pics of others boxes and mess with your own you will also soon find there are only so many ways you can present slices of meat or racks of ribs
I agree also that a CBJ class would be a real good idea as well |
