Question aboutnew drum smoker

Im making my first drum smoker. I bought a new barrel that has not had anything in it and it doesn't have a liner. I burned it out and sanded the outside. Do I really need to sand the inside since it has not had anything in it?

If it doesn't have a liner than you are fine.

You didn't have to burn it out or sand the inside.

I had to burn it out to get the paint off of the outside but the inside doesn't have a liner. It is a new barrel so nothing has ever been in it.

No need to get the paint off the outside. Just paint over it.

I've built half a dozen UDS's with all new drums. Kept drum exterior paint on all of them. No paint issues whatsoever unless you get over 600 or so.

interesting. I was wondering about this

I am going to build one one of these days and have 2 drums that are unlined and the black paint on the outside of them is perfect.

I was hoping to skip buring the paint off and just using it as is?

Yes you can, no problem. On mine, I scotch-brite the exterior paint and wipe clean with acetone. Then I paint it with Rustoleum 2000 degree flat black paint over the factory paint to use as a primer. Then I paint the drum with regular Rustoleum paint.

Prior to painting and seasoning i wiped inside and out with low odor mineral spirits.

good idea to wash our or wiped down the inside. Could be some leftover manufacturing oils, etc.
