I got a call yesterday from a buddy who was telling me about a new contest in LaPorte City on July 19 & 20. Only problem is Waterloos' 7th annual BBQloo & Blues is the same weekend (July 18-19) and is only about 15 mi. away. And to top it off Mike & Thresa Lake are reps for both contests.
I thought there was great effort by KCBS not to double up contests, I guess not.
How do they expect to fill both contests with quality numbers of teams?
We're not really in the meca of BBQ here in Northeast Iowa like around KC.

Waterloo's turn in is Saturday as normal
LaPorte's turn in is on Sunday

We'll be there!

One is a Friday/Saturday contest and the other is a Saturday/Sunday contest. The contests look like they are right on top of each other, mileage wise. So I think it was a great idea by both the KCBS and the event organziers. If I was going to do Waterloo again this year, I would do both... As I enjoyed Waterloo last year.

Two contests in one weekend ain't easy even if they are in the same location. Ask someone who knows...

Fortunately, we have family that lives in the town of the second one so we'll have additional help setting up/tearing down and real bathrooms/showers less then a mile away. Yes, I'll be packing the bicycle for that one - it's a flat ride too!

I got a farkin' high school reunion that weekend!
I don't remember liking anyone back then so I should probably just go to waterloo!! Don't these people realize that I have food commitments to attend to?

Not that uncommon around here (midwest). Happens once or twice a year. No it's not easy...but not much worth doing is.

A few years back a handful of teams here did 3 in one weekend...GAB invite, then open, then traveled to Parsons, KS. It was Memorial Day weekend and the last contest had turn-ins on Monday. Now that's a marathon!

I think it's even cooler when these types of contests offer and overall award for highest score combined between the two contests. That's a great way to boost the number of teams in each contest.

In case it hasn't been mentioned, LaPorte City got their KCBS sanction. Right now I plan on judging Waterloo & helping a buddy cook at LaPorte City.

Often KCBS has little to do with scheduling. This year, because of leap year and how weekends are falling out, there are several situations where contests are falling on top of each other. In our area, we have five contests within 30 minutes of each other on the same weekend. In other years, they would be spread across two weekends and still have 50+ teams each. Often the organizers are limited to when the space is available to them like at a fair grounds or park that may have other events on alternative weekends. The organizer is faced with canceling the contest or hoping for the best. If they proceed, KCBS is in a tough spot when the contest is one that has been sanctioned in previous years.

I've attended on KCBS BOD meeting that lasted HOURS. Contest sanctioning and schedules was one of the agenda items. It was eye opening.

I believe the LaPorte organizer scheduled the comp on the same weekend as Waterloo on purpose - hoping to attract some teams that were going to do Waterloo. I talked to him down at the Big Creek competition. This is LaPorte's first BBQ comp and it's limited to 30 teams this first year. It will be set up at the city park and if I remember correctly, has lots of shade.

I like the idea - I think. Ask me again on July 21.

Hey Dave looks like we'll finally get to meet. I'm Judging W'loo and am thinking about LaPorte. Wife and I like to camp at McFarland just a couple mins from beautifull downtown LaPorte.
