So getting ready to build a stick burner and wondering bout wood now. I know cherry, apple, pecan and all those but haven't heard anything about walnut. Seeing as I would have an endless supply at my FIL farm I am really hoping you guys like the stuff.
 
Being a woodworker, walnut is my favorite building material. I would get those logs milled and build something if it were me, but... I have tried it before for cooking.. It can be a bit strong, sometimes bitter. Try it out, use it sparingly. It can almost fall into that mesquite category, better for red meats, not so much for fish and poultry.
 
Thanks for the insight. Yeah I was resistant in using because the fact of how beautiful it can look. But having probably 50+ acres thought it would be worth a shot just with the stuff fallen already.
 
I've heard any fruit or nut wood is good to use besides the old standbys.

Try it and see how you like it. Experiment! We'll need a full report on the Walnut. ;D
 
I've used it in the past. I had a black walnut in our yard. It is a bit strong, so yes,
I would say use it sparingly.
 
As was said use it sparingly it is a very strong wood in my opinion
 
Cool will try. Another question. We have what we call "water" maples to. Not the Red or Sugar ones I don't think. Anyone use that?
 
Sorry have no idea on that, but no need to worry about the shut the fark up until you have like 2000 posts :laugh:

I'm not much on the maples, with that being said, I haven't ever heard of
water maple, I do know all maples love water. Living on the river, there were sugar maple all along the shoreline.
