R2D2 UDS? Jalapeno UDS?
Well, it was a "just because" thing...The UDS was working great.
N8man "rednecked" smoker was the inspiration. Wife said it looks like a ripe Jalapeno! My son said its a tank w/the guns pointing the wrong way! Looks like motleys! I did a practice burn tonite, It just about killed me to not have any food in it! The temps are easy to maintain! I used the same 1/4 inch pipe nipples, a 1/4-3/4 inch elbow, 46 inch 3/4 inch pipe,.. with one 3/4 in.- 1/4 in. elbow, to fit a ball valve I already had. (I'm cheap!) the other a reg. 3/4 in. elbow. 2 3/4 in. pipe nipples on bottom. Temps- 7:15 start fire 7:30 275* 7:45 275* 8:00 275* all vents closed, except ball valve 8:30 245 ball joint 1/4 open 9:00 225 open other 3/4 nipple 9:45 224 going to bed! Whatcha think? I can take it! My wife thinks I'm crazy, but loves the que!

<Temps-
9:00 225* 9:45 224* going to bed! woke up, 6 hours later and temps were at 194, hmmm....gave it a kick and opened some vents lets see what happens, 7:00 a.m 225* and climbing 11:00 a.m- 279* 12:00- 240* closed all vents, except one 2:00 coals gone... Test complete... 17 hour burn, (could have stretched it longer if needed) on about 7lbs of Rancher/3 chunks of wood. air flow is the same, if not better, knees don't hurt! I wonder if I can add foot peddles? Just kidding Thawley! isn't it great that you don't have to bend over? I need to put food in that UDS next time!

Ey Roy!
You should paint it, either military olive drab green sorta like the lid or desert camouflage with a white star on it.

Seems you have yourself a good cooker on your hands. Now get to work and throw some meat in it, and give her a good test drive. Don't forget the pics! ! !
I wish I were handy at building stuff, Iwould like to have a Drum smoker one day.

I'm thinking of building a mini UDS. 14 " at the top diameter and 37" high. As soon as I find grills that will fit I'm gonna start it. My dad owns a pipe nipple company and mom runs a supply company out of his that sells valves. So I can pick up their scraps and get to work. I figure a butt or some beer can chickens would fit great and it'll be portable. Ribs I can just bend around on a rib rack. I think the ID is 13 1/2 " I may have to go with a 10" rack and watch the fall off. But I work nights and been waking up early so I hope it can get 1/2 the cook time all the other UDS's get.

Go for it! On the mini uds, you need at least 24 inch between fire and grate... or waterpan...

Building a drum is easy. Finding a good clean one is sometimes the hardest part. especially with the Brethren snapping them up.
