Your camping grill of choice? Weber go-Anywhere or Smokie Joe Gold?
I am looking at buying a portable grill for camping and pic-nicks and such. I was at first looking at ordering a weber smokie joe gold but now I think a weber go-anywhere would be more versatile. When camping I would just be grilling for 2.5 to 3 people max.
Which grill would you chose to bring to cook on for your overnights/campouts? If I had too cook for more I could bring my OTS. Still if I bring that then there is less room for beer!

I'm probably the wrong guy to chime in, because I normally take both my 22.5" kettle and WSM camping. But wifey says I need to down size, so I was considering the go anywhere grill, the stuff Phubar cooks on his is inspiring.

I'd have to go with the smokey Joe just because you can easily convert it to a mini wsm. I'll post a link when I get to a computer. And it's a solid smoker that can hold 2-3 racks and smoke enough for 10 people. Just my .02

I go camping about ten times a year, and I love my Smokey Joe Gold.
In honesty, I have never owned a Go Anywhere, so I can't do a fair comparison. But, I cook anything from one steak to a grill full of chicken on the SJG, and always have good results. I have even smoked a few fatties, many MOINKS, and a really good meatloaf on the SJG. And, it travels in the back of my station wagon without making a mess. CD |

I cook on a 18.5" kettle. I remove the legs and stow them seperately from the kettle. A great size for a family of four.

I have an old Coleman camping fireplace. Basically a portable fire pit. When we camped a lot of places wouldn't allow campfires...so we took this firepit. It breaks down pretty compactly and has a firescreen for the "campfire" or "fireplace" mode and a pretty decent grill for cooking. The lid is used for either grilling or fireplace mode. Carried it in our camper for years and now it's stored in the shed with my cooking stuff. It still get's broken out every now and then! It's a ot more primative than the new stuff!!

Any owners of a Go-anywhere care to chip in? Not a large fan base of that grill compared to the SJG which is why at first I thought SJG all the way but I honestly think the go-anywhere should be able to handle anything the SJG can plus it may be easier to do a version of indirect grilling then on the SJG. SJG has slightly less cooking area if I'm right?

there is the link for mine...probably not the best link in the world but theres links inside there to assist you further, especially the tvwwb link. since my build, i cut out the bottom and used the bottom rack to hold my clay heat sink wrapped in foil. And i have the sjs so i added a small dog bowl with holes to cover my intake to stop the ash cloggage. If i had to do it again, I'd go SJG all the way. I smoked the other day from 7am to 6pm at 200* and when i shut her down, i still had a good amount of coals left. Probably coulda gone another couple hours. anyway, im not gonna hijcack your thread any further, good luck with your choosing....cant go wrong either way, weber makes great products. |

I have been asking a similar question to myself, "which one?"
I am leaning to the WGA due to Phubar's wonderful propaganda campaign he has been waging for awhile! I also like that if you need to move it in a hurry, it has handles and can just be picked up.

i think one problem is that the wga is near double the sj. a lot more sj's out there than the wga. i think they both got their purpose's. but to me its not that much to get/have both. my real concern is that many states/place are banning charcoal.

I have a Smokey Joe, but, in the past, I just took the grate from my kettle and propped it on rocks.
