Stick burner maintance
I have had my first stick burner, for about 2 months now. Having great results with it. I've seasoned it, or so I think I did. I am finding that I am having to oil some spots every time, after I have used it. Where the reverse flow plate ends and the heat and smoke rise, the grates always look dried out. But, the main problem is the firebox! I oil it down, on the inside, constantly. I am now getting creosote in the top (inside) of the firebox from oil burning off, I suppose? It always looks dry and dusty after every use. Am I going about this the wrong way? Or is it just the nature of the beast?

I don't see a need to oil the inside of the firebox.
You can keep oil on the outside of it to help prevent rust from beginning.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something to get longevity out of it. Already have surface rust on the grate in firebox. I kinda expected that to happen. My O.C.D. just wants it to be perfect as long as possible.

Don't worry too much about the insides too much, just keep cooking lots of pork butts and briskets and you'll have a self seasoning pit. On the outside of the cooker you can do what I do and spray the whole thing down about every six months with vegetable spray (Pam) and let it bake on while you cook. It'll help to preserve the paint and quickly cover any nicks or scratches that may rust. It'll form the kind of black tar like coating that forms on well seasoned pancake griddles or cast iron skillets.

Really it is the nature of the beast. The heat inside will burn away pretty much anything. Even the outside will dry out and need to be touched up. If you try to keep it clean and then totally clean everything once a year it should last you for years.

Thanks! I already have that, thick, tackiness to the outside. I was more worried about the inside. So, that one section of my grates, where the reverse flow plate ends, that gets dried out. Should I not reoil it?

Try some lard, it'll have a little more substance to it than veggie spray!

Will do! I've used Canola spray and vegetable oil.

I use some Crisco with good results. I was anal about my firebox when I first got it. Now I realize the paint is gonna burn off regardless of what I paint it with so I just season it up with some Crisco and that keeps it looking like a cast iron pan. I wouldn't worry about the inside of the firebox..Never seen one that looked good that wasn't new.

I spray my cooker with oil before and after every cook, including the firebox. That will guarantee its longevity and help preserve and prevent the metals from rusting and keep it well seasoned like a skillet.
I invested a ton of money and want to keep my smoker in top shape and rust free as long as possible. Yes, it's OCD, but I feel better. I make sure not to go crazy spraying oil so not to create pools of oil in the firebox. |

Haven't seen any paint trying to burn off.....yet. Only spot that even looks ugly, is the bottom side of the firebox(outside), for obvious reasons. I've been wiping everything down, on the outside, with Canola. Sounds like I just need to worry less about it and just do something every so often as far as the firebox goes. Thanks for all your suggestions and input, folks!!
