What not to use and use and for how long during my first 55 gallon burn out?
What are good and bad materials?
Do use charcoal to start it or just paper and firewood? How long should the burnout last for? Should the air holes be drilled before or after the burnout? |

The 'best' and cleanest way to burn out a drum is with a $20 weed burner from Harbor Freight. It's quick, easy, and overall does a better job than building a bonfire in the drum from what I have seen.
If you are going to build a fire in the drum, you do need to drill your air intake holes in the drum first to stoke that fire.

I used a clean pallet for mine and start it with a turbo torch. Defiantly drill the air hole first make a hotter fire.

I'm with Pappy. I drill my holes, cut up some pallets, stack the pieces around the inside edge of the barrel, then pour a chimney full of lit charcoal into the center. I'll continue to add pieces of pallet as needed, until I'm out of pallets.

I hit mine with the weed burner first and then used two pallets to burn out the rest. On mine that had the dreaded liner, I did come back with a grinder and hit a few tough spots that didn't burn out.

I was planning on using old wood with the bark still on. Does anyone recommend this?

Go for it. I wouldn't use wet smelly rotten wood.
