What would be the recomended distance from bottom of fire grate to cooking grate?
The uds thread recommends 24"
I'd go with that...Weber has already done the math!A Weber 22.5 is 5" from the charcoal grate to the cooking grate if I remember correctly. Let us know how it works out.
Although I have to admit I've never "Grilled" on it I purposely made my grates 5" apart on my UDS so I could conceivably "Grill" on it at some point. I might need some air intakes on the upper portion to make it work right though.
5" is what I'd go with too.
Here is what I did. Real basic and no other drum need either. I used the charcoal basket from the drum, with an additional charcoal grate near the top, and placed a cast iron grate from a large BGE on top of the basket. This is excellent for short, REALLY high heat cooks. Have only done rib eyes this way so far.
Great char and crust on the beef. Don't forget to pour on some herb butter for added flavor and that all important crowd pleasing GIGANTIC flare up!
The cast iron grate is about 4" from the coals.

That's great ! Simplicity is king, and visually appealing. I'll be doing that
