Default Rockwood Lump black on startup?

I used Rockwood for the first time and *thought* I could detect some dark, almost black smoke, coming out of my chimney. Just used it to grill some ribeyes and didn’t notice any bad taste but was concerned that *if* something like that is going on that it wouldn’t work for a low & slow smoke.

Has anyone else seen anything like that?

I've always felt it was some of the cleanest start up and burning charcoal I've used. I wouldnt give it a second thought.

I use it exclusively. It smokes a little heavy at start sometimes but cleans up real quick. Never had an issue with taste. It is my favorite lump since Ozark went away.

^^^^ same here. Used Ozark then Rockwood in BGE for years with no problem. Rockwood not available now that Firecraft stopped carrying so it’s Royal Oak or whatever is available at HD, Lowe’s, etc.

I got mine at Ace Hardware. It was on the shelf and on their website. Might be an option for you.
