Ash problems.................;}-
A while back there was a thread on ridding the ashes in the firebox, while still cooking. There were lots of ideas and some of them were a little over the top. I do things the simple way, all the glitz and glitter just complicates the chore.
When I am doing a long overnighter and the ash piles up, I just open the door of the firebox and pull out the little metal plate I have sitting on the bottom of the box. Using gloves, I then dump the ashes into a bucket I have decicated for that, tap it on the edge so all the mess comes off and replace to plate back into the firebox. No problem, no muss or fuss and the plate serves to protect the bottom of the FB from burnout. This doesn't have to be very heavy guage, 1/16th in. material will do.And this will work in a small offset or a bigger smoker like the BYC models. It's a little hard to see, but if you look close, you can see the plate on the bottom of the FB. Just a little tip, hope it helps some of you. Enjoy an SMOKE HAPPY Stan aka bbqfans |

I use a metal pry bar type thing (old broken shovel) stick under box, push bar up causing box to move up, in my other hand I have a flat shovel a couple scoops its all gone..empty in a metal ash bucket...Takes no more than 10 seconds.

That's why I like the removeable ash pans on the Klose pits. I can empty the ashes at anytime without even opening the firebox.

I elevated the rack in my firebox on my SKD with fire bricks placed on their side lenghtwise. Before doing this I had to empty the ash tray several times during a long cook. Now I dont have to empty empty the ash pan until after I am done with the cook, and it allows for more air and more effecient use of fuel.

I should add, that my rack is expanded metal so the ashes fall through easily. Don't worry, we have enough from the bash to find something.... lol
