Default My ThermPro TP08

..seems unreliable. My grate probe reads 129, while the meat probe, just set through a top vent on the PK, reads 340.

Seems like an awfully wide swing on a small cooker. Any ideas or suggestions? I'm tempted just to get an instant read pen and forget about chamber temp. I know about where it runs with x amount of charcoal.

Can you swap the grate probe & meat probe positions in the transmitter?
That may tell you if its in the probe or the connections in the transmitter
I always like to make a proper ice bath to verify the probes are reading accurately
I'm sure your aware most thermistor probes you dont want to submerge the probe where water can get in the end where the braided cable is crimped,
Compare the Two probes in a ice bath & maybe hot water to see how close they both read
Good luck

Any chance your grate probe is in Celsius? I've never used that particular thermometer so I'm not sure if you can have one probe in Celsius and the other in Fahrenheit. Also, heat rises, so right there at the exhaust will be the highest temp in your smoking chamber (outside of directly over the coals of course).

As already suggested I always check the probes in an ice water bath and a boiling pot of water. You should be very close to 32° in the ice water and 210-212° in the boiling pot. If one probe is way off then you can replace that probe, or just go ahead and upgrade to a more robust thermometer like the Thermoworks Smoke or the Dot.

Good luck!
