I am in the market for good commercial sauces: a spicy mustard based sauce, and a sweet red. I want to do my first competition this summer, and am going to start practicing this weekend.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The sheer volume of sauces available can be vastly overwhelming.

Thanks in advance.

For red sauces i like Blues Hog and Head Country

Blues Hog Original mixed with Blues Hog Tennessee Red is really good

Used to make my own sweet sauce but "Sweet Baby Ray's" tastes so close I just tweak it with a little cayenne & red pepper flakes. +1 on the Blues Hog it's pretty awesome as well but I don't use sauces much and just make it available.

Years ago I started using BBQ sauce in place of ketchup for burgers and fries. IF I am not using a homemade BBQ sauce. I end up using either Cattlemen kansas city classic or sweet baby rays.

Grandma's ketchup recipe taste alot like Cattlemens.

Obviously this is highly subjective, I was just looking for some starting places and suggestions from people who've been there. My apologies if the question is to vague or broad.

simple way, but can be costly...

buy a small bottle of each that you find and try them out. the list posted above I would pick from the top, already proven performers. and then pick from lower down the list, picking the newish products, and skipping the big brands down low.

the reason for picking the lower ones, is that they are still new enough to not have made a name, and are placed low for that and not based on flavor.

It's a legit question. Some of the folks here have it narrowed down to 2-3 favorites. I'd probably never make it in the comp world, I like things changed up all the time. You might jump into the comp forum and seek their suggestions as to what the judges look for and such, might be able to narrow things down a little that way.

The problem is that I am almost entirely ignorant on the subject. Is there a favorite mustard-based sauce? I can't tell from the list posted above which, if any, is a mustard-based sauce.

Well Cool! Big Ron's is in at 19 in the list Onexchef posted. Go Big Ron!

Blues Hog is a good place to start. All of there sauces are pretty darn good. As mentioned by others you can use it as a base and dr it up to your liking

For a semi spicy mustard based sauce check out Cattleman's Carolina Tangy Gold. It is really good. I actually also like the Cattlemans St Louis Orginal and Mississippi Sweet
