I was reading an article in Time Out Chicago last night, and one of our long time pitmasters, who uses the Chciago-style aquarium smoker, talked about using mulberry as his main source for smoke. He said that hickory can get too expensive. Has anyone every used mulberry before? This isn't a wood that I've ever read about anyone using, until last night.

Gives food a root beer smoked flavor. I prefer my cherry over the mulberry. I think it's important that if your gonna use mulberry, use the wood that was from a fruit bearing tree.

Mulberry is everywhere in the Chicagoland area. CHit grows like weeds and smells like cotton candy when burned.

Yep. We had a bird drop a mulberry seed in its chit and we had a tree the next day.

OK. I exaggerate a little :-D

I use it, but as an accent wood. As Steph mentioned, the smoke is very sweet and I think it would be too much as the only wood.

I mixed some with hickory and had some awesome pork out of it. I am just waiting for the rest of the tree to come down so I can have some more.
