We often went down to Mexico when I was young. I remember when I was about 5 being near a border town. I think we were in the area to see some native American dancing. Somewhere out in the middle of nowhere we pulled off on the side of the road and a group of ranchers were cooking meat on spits over a fire. The pit was brick and it had a metal roof on top to protect from the sun, and there were a lot of flies around. Very much like a spaghetti western. This really was out in the middle of nowhere. We had some bread with chunks of meat on the side. It was the best farkin' meat I ever had. It tasted like nothing I ever had before and ever had since. I still remember the flavor of it to this day. I kept asking my parents what kind of meat it was because I knew it was different. Days later I found out it was horse, but nobody wanted to tell me, like I even cared. I have no idea how that would compare to the horse meat you'd get now.

No, in America, it just seems wrong to eat Trigger.
I won't eat Felix or Fido either. Sent from my Android phone.

It is entirely possible I ate meat from a very old horse, but my BIL called it steak. It was too thick to be cowhide, so I can only guess what it was before it died a horrible death on his grill.

yes, in Asia, like above it is very lean and flavorful, somewhat like Elk or Bison.

I had it in Mexico. I'm pretty sure I've eaten dog too. That was closer to South America though. Neither case was in a restaurant, it was more like... that was the meat that was there.

Horse meat was commonly used in Europe (Germany) after WW II They were no longer required for labor, why feed them?,so they were slaughtered and sold for consumption and was relatively cheap. Due to the nature of the meat being on the sweet side, it was the meat of choice to make the dish known as "Sauer Braten". A vinegar solution, water, salt. pepper corns, cloves, bay leave and sugar was heated up and poured over the meat and marinated for
at least 5 days. The meat was then roasted, a gravy made from the brine solution and served with red cabbage and potato dumplings. Yea,i have eaten it,many times, and loved it. I still love Sauer Braten but now living in the good ole USA, i use Venison instead.

I can think of two horses that I've owned that I probably should have eaten.

I spent 12 years in public schools here in the US, so, yeah, I probably have eaten horse meat.
I have also had my share or MREs, so there you go.

If you have ever eaten Chinese food then you have probably eaten horse, cat, dog or road kill.

If you've ever eaten out in the sticks of Texas swamps you've probably eaten all those things too. Just include "feral" or "bob" in front of them.

I can't recommend any of these...
I ate some Horse Meat in Germany. (another Red meat) I ate some Monkey Meat in Central America. (Stringy) Camel Meat at a Frat party. (Tough) (When I was 18-25, I didn't cull anything.) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the other hand... Deer, Elk, and Bear are quite tasty. Yum... Forgot to add Buffalo. Good Steaks too Last edited by Ole Man Dan; 01-12-2013 at 10:35 PM.. Reason: additional text |
