Default Baconfest (long and lots of pron)

mods, feel free to move if not the right area.

Saturday I went to the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival AKA Baconfest. 600 people gathered for the 3rd annual fest of everything bacon. It was held in Des Moines.

While we waited to get in they had beers you could buy. PBR, Coors, High Life and Miller Lite. Keep that in mind.

So waiting in the lobby we ran into bacon man

Then upon entering we were served a bacon bloody mary's made with Bakon flavored vodka and topped with fresh bacon bits.

And girls from the roller derby team (I had no idea one existed) were serving maple frosted doughnuts topped with bacon

Up close

Elvis sang the national anthem to kick things off

Pork producers such as Farmland, Vande Rose, Eden Prairie pork and others had trays of bacon you could eat. Each had about 2 chafing pans full at all times and this was open for four hours to help yourself to. I love bacon but you can only eat so much. Some people had such heaping piles of it.

Jason from BBQ Addicts prepped 60 Bacon Explosions for this and here he is parading the Bacon Explosion through the crowd.

Appetizers of bacon wrapped pineapple and appricots.

Pizza with cream cheese instead of sauce with bacon, sausage, roasted red pepper, onion, green pepper and jalepeno. Very rich and good.

Now onto deserts. This cupcake was great.
Chocolate Chip Pancake cupcake. Made with maple syrup and buttermilk topped with milk chocolate bacon buttercream. The brownie was so so.

Chocolate covered bacon with gourmet chocolate. So so i thought. bacon needed to be crispier and saltier.

Bacon Bananas Foster. Bananas were fried in a mixture including Templeton Rye whisky and topped with bacon. These were going so fast the line outside the kitchen was 10 deep. Only item that was not on platters going around with servers.

Maple Bacon Butter Pecan Ice Cream. Hand churned butter pecan with bacon mixed in.

I missed the bacon chocolate chip cookies and the bacon caramel pop corn but honestly I needed a gallon of water. All that cheap beer and all that bacon made for a perfect nap opportunity. Literally it was all you could eat bacon and this stuff was coming out about every 30 minutes not to mention the bacon buffet I showed earlier.

Ton of fun. Next year they think they will get 1500. The 600 tickets sold out in 20 min online.

Does anyone else feel that bacon might be the next replacement for salt and pepper?

Lived in Iowa City from 2006 to 2009... just moved last August. Wish I had known about Baconfest I, II.

Guess I will have to live vicariously... those donuts look tasty!

The only thing that could've made those pics better is more bacon!
