Has anyone had any experience with the Best Choice 100% briquettes?
I know that the Best Choice lump is made by RO ...... and I wondered about their briquettes ... so I sent Associated Wholesale Grociers an e-mail asking who made them, .... This is what I got back;

We are in receipt of correspondence regarding your recent inquiry. The ingredients in Royal Oak briquets are proprietary. To use an all natural product with no additives please try our lump charcoal products.

Thank you,

So, ........ What does the phrase "100% Hardwood Charcoal" on the bag really mean???
Any ideas???
Thanks

It means that the charcoal used in the production of the briquettes is only from hardwood sources. I am not aware of any briquettes made from softwoods, but, I bet they would be terrible if there were some. There are briquettes made from other materials, so it is not quite as ridiculous as it might sound. It is a tad deceptive if you assume it means that each briquette only has hardwood charcoal in it.

Yeah, I don't know, but if they're briquettes made by RO, they might not be good. I use RO lump a lot and like it well enough. Bought a bag of RO briquettes by mistake when I saw them on sale at the grocery store one time (didn't look closely enough and thought I grabbed lump). They were the worst smelling charcoal I've every used. Very acrid smell throughout the burn. I know the RO line is very extensive, so I don't mean to say that all of their briquettes are bad, just that I got some I didn't like at all. Buyer beware I guess.

One of the problems I have noted with most charcoal is that some of it is often poorly stored or quite old, you can get a real bad smell off of poorly stored briquettes, or ones that have been stored in a moist or humid area. I have use RO briquettes and they have worked fine. Then again, the very next bag I get might be bad.

I have used the Best Choice briqs.with good reports. The ash wasn't half as bad as blue K and the taste was ok. It's on sale here now for $2.99 for 18# bags. It's well worth that IMO. I like using RO's Chef's Best or Select when doing long burns. RO lump for less than six hour cooks. For the nasty smelling stuff, I would think improper storage has happened, making some mold or fungus. With the humidity we get, I don't stock up as much as I would in a drier climate. Steve.
