UDS seems wasting too much space.
Why not reduce vertical space. Offset wastes too much heat and firebox is a big safety issue. Why not put firebox inside the smoker I am thinking to build a new firebox to put inside the offset What do you think |

I don't think you understand the cultural differences here versus there. My UDS is sometimes too big for my cooks, but, often, it is too small as well. In truth, the UDS is a marvel of efficiency.
In terms of firebox inside of a cooker, there are a few that are like that. But, the traditional side firebox, offset cooker is a proven design, that operates quite well for what it does. There are hundreds of variations, but, the side offset still holds the top spot for that kind of cooking.

I love my offset for several reasons, and I love my UDS for several other reasons. I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with though - challenging and innovating is a good thing!

I agree with GTR, do you have a drawing of your idea?
I cant really picture it with just your explanation. The 'wasted' space in a UDS is actually functional, people usually put some kind of heat diffuser inbetween the grill grates and the fire. Also, cutting into a 55 gallon drum to make it smaller is a lot of work when its not really necessary. |

![]() Inside the smoking barrel, there is a dia. 4" pipe as burner. Inside the burner, there is a dia. 1" perforated air pipe, optional. Need more test to see whether the air pipe is necessary or not. Outside is a blower. The burner can be pull out or push back for refilling. can light the fuel from left or right. The fuel can be on fire all at same time. Or the fuel can burn step by step backward. can put an reverse "V" plate above the burner to collect grease, beside the burner there are 2 water/grease pans to receive grease remove the burner, but leave air pipe there, it can be used for high temperature grilling. There are may be 2 blowers at both ends |

Review the following link and video about horizontal smokers with an internal firebox...
http://www.peoriacookers.com/custom-...t-monster.html You will see that the concept works and has already been developed

By blower do you mean an electrical unit of some sort?

But seems meat monster uses same offset concept whether the firebox is inside or outside the smoker. I am using a horizontal BURNER or firebox. |

Woodpelletsmoker,
As always your mind is working, and considering the logical. But some things don't follow logic, consider the bee, engineers swear it should not fly, but yet it does... I've often looked at your products and can see the brilliance of your thinking, always considering space and efficientcy. Please build a UDS! Really build one, play with it for a few cooks and your mind will spin! The seemingly wasted space above the charcoal basket and cooking grill, effectively baffles the live fire yet lets the fat and rendering juices fall into the fire providing moisture and flavor. No deflector is needed , although many argue for one. The large charcoal basket really isn't needed, until you load six pork butts in it and let it cook 14- 18 hours without need to adjust. So the large basket is to be flexible but only fill what coal is needed or snuff when done Consider the types of heat that is provided by the UDS, radiant heat, convection heat, conducted heat, you will not see that in many cookers. Then consider the barrel shape and how those types of heat travel in it. You like to tinker and you like woodpellets , try another UDS and change it to woodpellets, or your gravity burner. I'm sure you will have much to say about it once you try it.

I am in China. I can build UDS by SS at affordable price.
But the size and its shipping cost kill all possibility. So I am thinking wthether I can make it smaller or not |

I'm not saying build one as a product to sell, I'm saying build one to study! Many of your controllers and products could adapt to a UDS and knowing how and why a UDS works would give insight to a huge market

I am thinking firebox/basket in UDS.
It needs too much fresh air to burn. Much more fresh air by-passes the charcoal basket, which causes big convention. Convention simply brings away moisture and makes meat dry. A Kamado smoker has more rediation than convention. It claims more juicy. I am thing to supply ceramic lining for UDS. But the weight and shipping cost may kill my plan. I am thinking also to introduce Kamado fire box to UDS. Fresh air only goes up through grate under charcoal. Much less extra fresh air is introduced. Less convention, and less moisture lose |

Probaby the most important aspect of the UDS's popularity is the pride you get in building an inexpensive and excellent smoker yourself. Added to that is the fun you get by innovating and personalizing it.
