Talking UDS build, thanks for getting me hooked - pron heavy

Many thanks for the information on this site. Went from a gasser smoke to my first UDS. Build, UDS to first fattys, then Sunday feast of 2 rib racks, brisket and sides.
Build, end product:

First Fattys, 1 exploded:

Sunday feast, ABT's, Moinks, ribs, brisket flat (turned out dry), sides:

Thanks for converting and addicting me!

That is a super-nice barrel -- what was it originally used for? Is it new? I like that it has no ribbing in it. Wow, that would be nice to have!

All the food looks excellent! Good thing I just ate! Great job!!!

Hey, can you expound on your inserts for the thermometers? Nice work.

Congrats! Drum and eats look great. You'll figure out the brisket. I especially like the ladder-table mod. I need one of those.

Soy ink from newspaper company. Power washed it, then burned about 6 wood palettes, took all ink and paint off. Finshed with wire brush on angle grinder hi temp paint outside and veggie oil inside.

Also have added a cheapo kettle lid with lip mods as well as snap in caps for original barrel lid.

Hmmmm....a newspaper company, huh? I'll just have to walk next door, then, though I think all our ink comes by the tanker truck.

What are the thermometer inserts made out of? I like that idea, keeps them out of harm's way until needed.

Thermometer are 1 standard Walmart 7/8 grill therm, and 1 12" deepfryer therm going through a hole drilled in a 5/8" bolt that was ground down in size.

I like that UDS! Clean and black on the outside and shiny and ready on the inside. Good looking grub, too!

I just joined yesterday, then spent HOURS reading the UDS thread -your post is just more reason to start searching for materials to build my own, to replace my COS. Nice build, good looking pron - well done. How did you do your potatoes, if it wouldn't be giving away any secrets?

Typical party potatoes: 2 bags Ore-Ida Potatoes O’Brien, 1 stick melted butter, pint sour cream, 8oz green chilli's, 1/2 Velveeta mexican, jar chiz whiz.

Roasted: 1/2 stick butter, 4 medium potatoes washed & cubed. Coated potatoes with the melted butter and Italian dressing.

Love the smooth look of the non-ribbed drum... and the basket looks ready for any kind of cooking length.

The food looks super yummy, the fatty that exploded would be great in a tortilla or on a bed of rice...

Newsprint ink, eh? Will keep that in mind.

Thanks for sharing pics of the build and the eats with us!
