Default Wood boring bettle larve

Anyone having trouble with bettle larve in your wood pile ?

I am going to have to chunk all the pecan wood I have because I have beetle larve making sawdust out of it from the inside out. There must be 10 of them for ever 12" of limb at 5"-6" in diameter.

They resemble grub worms.

This honker would easily fetch a 10 lb bass.

I get those guys every year. That's why I basically need to go through all my wood every year either in the smokers or the fireplace. I still use it that way though. No harm done in the smoker or the fireplace. I did however move the entire woodpile farther from the house. They seem to love the pecan. I've had maple, pine, plum and oak on the same wood pile and they don't touch the stuff.

When I said chunk, I meant bust it all down small so I can get as many worms out as possible. I think I can salvage most of it before it all turns to dust.

I get something like those in my Eucalyptus, called Borers (they will kill a live tree) and Pecan. Not so much in the Mesquite.

That would be an Old House Borer larvae. Don't concern yourself too much about them just cut the wood into small chunks and keep it out of the house.

They were in the last Pecan I cut down but it was a pretty old tree, I just cut it in logs and debarked the logs. As it dried they dried up to.

Sweet! Maybe we can start trading dried larvae of differing flavors to add larvae smoke?

http://www.ento.okstate.edu/ddd/inse...eadedborer.htm

Flatheaded Wood Borers Hosts: Most hardwood trees.
Symptoms: Pecan and other trees that are weak, recently transplanted, young or damaged by sun scald, freeze or mechanical injury are usually attacked. Evidence of larval feeding includes frass or excrement that has been pushed out and dark depressed areas of bark. These dark areas may appear wet or greasy and have a white frothy sap oozing from cracks.

So as long as you don't mind the smell and taste of burnt larval excrement....

Yep, they add flovor to your meat!

I get them in my pile and have thought about using them as bait at the lake!
