BBQ Street Vendor on Bicycle

This street vendor in Shanghai, China really impressed me with his ingenuity.

It was the middle of December, about 10 pm and it was freezing outside. Most folks were bundled up in down coats, boots and gloves... and there was this guy selling BBQ'd meat sticks from a mobile coal grill mounted on his BICYCLE.

Several types of meats were offered. Everything was cooked fresh. Cost was literally peanuts!

Everything was self-contained. Pack up was fast too. When the police came to clear the square of all the street vendors (illegal)

, he had everything locked down and was cycling off in LESS than a minute.

Needless to say, I was impressed.

Ingenious setup, something you'd never see in the states with the concern for toxicity of cooking with galvanized metals.

we have made innovation illegal in the u.s.. better tow a porta potti with you if you sell street food around here. folks got mad when they tried to get rid of the taco trucks around here. stupid city thought folks would go to a restaurant for a quick bite. idiots.

I ate these little skewers a lot when visiting Beijing in the past, they put a great spice mix on it, spicey and heavy in cumin, did he use a simular seasoning??

Nope, sorry to say I didn't taste the goods. Wish I had, but I just had dinner and I was full up to the gills. Was only in Shanghai for a few days and never saw another like him again. Next time, I'd buy for sure, at least one each of the lamb, beef and pork. Darn, missed out on a great "Q" experience!~

No kidding! There were all these street vendors in an open pedestrian-only square. Everyone had their wares on blankets. Apparently, street vending is illegal in Shanghai, so the police would come by every so often. One minute everyone was busy plying their wares, the next minute the whole square was one giant fluid motion of blankets being folded and goods packed up. There were no sirens, no yelling, chaos or pandemonium. Looked like everyone had done this countless times before. Anyways, the whole square was empty of vendors in about a minute. Not a trace of them, no garbage, nothing. Amazing!

Hey, at least it wasn't road-kill. The meat looked clean and good, pre-skewered so there was no actual meat handling. There was more in his supplies box. Everything looked geared for mobile BBQ. The temperature outside was near freezing so I wasn't concerned about bad meat. Darn, now that I'm thinking of it, sure wish I had some of those skewers. So what if I was stuffed!

Thats a cool setup that guy had. I have always wondered if you could legally vend Q in the USA from a towable hotdog cart. They are always for sale and usually cheap. I think they only have one sink so I may have answered my own question there.
