I love it, that's exactly the sort of genius idea that comes from brain storming...

I've decided against a caster or a single tripod leg in front for stability reasons. The height of the drum gives it a very unfavorable center of gravity. And nobody likes to see a 225* object full of hot grease and burning coals to fall over in a stiff breeze. A fixed, out-rigger type leg set-up is definately a part of my future. But I really like the walker-tenis ball concept. Maybe when I build one for my dad...

Great write up! You must write advertizing for a living. Just the right dash of technical speak where regular words would do.

How do you keep it level with the wheels in the back?

I am most impressed with the charcoal basket/ashpan combo! I could use something like that myself!

Your reports, while detailed, display the inner workings of a mind not wholly unfamiliar with both press releases and mechanical trade magazines and catalogs. This distinct voice is both entertaining and informative providing your readers with not only the opportunity to come along on your barbecue adventure, but to learn some valuable life and cooking lessons at the same time. Bravo. Bravo to you for injecting a much needed voice full of detail and precision to this oft-traversed but rarely equalled bbq forum.

Kudos to you and your cooker.......

Ok...looked at the pics again and I have come up with a couple of conclusions.

1) Thawley knows some chit
2) I need to get out of the aircraft maintenance business and get into the photography business because they have lots of spare time on there hands...or
3) Maybe I need to ship 3 or 4 of my kids to his house.

Keep pluggin away dude...cant wait to see the finished project

or does it ever stop...

I haven't built the legs for it yet. Been resting it on bricks for now...

Lemme know if you need any help being talked out of that idea. I've been thinking about getting out of photography so I could make some real money in aircraft maintenance.

Just found this thread again an realized I neve posted "finished" photos with the front legs. I've been using it for nearly two years now and am fixin' to build another. When the new one's finished, this one's going to a good neighbor.

Things that work so well on this one I'd be a fool to change:
  • Rain-Safe curved exhaust
  • inner-lid hanger hook
  • Upside down build style using bungs as air intakes
  • fire basket/ash-pan design

Things I'll change when I build the next one:
  • paint
  • road tread tires instead of knobbies
  • proper dolly-type handle for moving
  • insulated lid handle
  • BGE-style cart with cutting board/prep counter, tool holders & more

Got some great ideas there. One thing though, you might want to put in a disclaimer on wearing your safety equipment (shoes).Don't want to get sued because somebody burned their tootsies.

I burned all the paint and coatings off and just never painted it.

It's an outdoor pet.
