Default pellet envy question

Why is he called pellet envy if he uses a stick burner?

Well, it's not like he changed over to just any stick burner. LOL!!

But, I think when the pellet cookers took bbq by storm the stick burners were still too up and down with the weather and such. Now the worm has turned and pits are being made with insulated fireboxes and other techniques that make them MUCH less volatile.

So now it's just run with what ya like.

I have heard reasons as to why he switched, but it's all hearsay. It would be best to hear directly from the source.

I watched the latest episode of "BBQ PITMASTERS" with Rod in it, and I had the same thought.

Hmm, I always thought he had that team name because the pellet cookers all "envy" the BBQ quality and goodness of a stick burner. I have had both and still prefer the stick, just seems to be a better flavor on the meat imo all other things being equal. Seems that stick burners still win more contests in Texas than all other uprights, pellets ect. ect. but there are also many more of those out there in this state too.

I think the name can go both ways. At first, people envied his pellet cooker. Now Rod can say that Pellet Cookers envy his stick burner.

Brilliant!

I'll type a more detailed answer when I can do it with more than two thumbs. Until then, we started out on pellets and I will always be a pellet head. I heard a rumor that Jamie was to stop building his sexy pits back in '04, so I had Johnny talk him into building me one. It took a year. That pit sat in the garage except for Sundays for two years. Finally, when fuel prices spiked in the summer of '07 and I paid $4.99 per gallon to fill up in the Pennsylvania turnpike on the way to DC to compete, pulling our parachute of a trailer with two FE-100's mounted on the deck, I decided I should give the little stick burner a shot. First time out, we won the contest. That's when I knew that good barbecue could be cooked on anything you learn. Same recipes, time adjustment, great results.

Oh, and there is this . . . . no pellet cooker has ever been the KCBS team of the year.

I tell those that ask this, a pellet pit is like a perimeter weighted iron (golf club), it helps you correct your shots that aren't struck perfect. A stick burner is more like an old school blade. You can do more with it to shape the product that comes off of one, but it's a little harder to manage.

Night all.

Rod, the fuel mileage thing was what I had heard. Good to hear directly from the source.

Also, good thought about TOY, I haven't heard that before.

Just goes to show it's the cook not the cooker. A good cook can cook on anything. Rod has and will continue to prove that.
