Default Adding lump charcoal

Does the same rule apply to adding lump to your fire as briquette? Or can you throw it on top and let it go? I know you guys mentioned a foul smoke from briquettes if you add them directly on top of fire. Thanks!

I usually add mine to an area that has burned out which borders hot coals..
