Question Firebox Questions

Hello All,

I built my pit number of years ago and with little know how other than metal working and welding. Recently I found a smoker calculator online that seems to confirm what I had suspected, that my firebox is undersized. I am currently in the process of acquiring materials to build a new firebox. The smoker calculator I found suggests that for my size of pit a 16x16x16 square firebox is 112.6% the size required. I am planning on insulating my new firebox as well. Basically it will be a cube within a cube with 1" insulation between them. If I plan to use a wire basket inside the firebox to hold the fuel, does the size of that basket need to be 16x16x16? Also, what kind of insulation would you use? I am considering either Kaowool or some form of ceramic insulation.

I am new to the site and appreciate your help,

Say it aint so! Your burning Regular in a Corvette??? Run that hot rod on Logs and save the coal for the Jilopie. Check MCmaster Carr for the insulation, Whatever you build either a log rack or a fire basket you want a full foot print and the base above the intake with plenty of circulation under the fire. Offsets are all about smooth FLOW.
