Anybody know a cheap solution to good grill marks? I want some add on cast iron grates to use for searing on the weber performer. Can I go with a porcelain coated cast iron? I want those pretty grill marks you eggers get!

You could also fit your chimney without removing the grateImageUploadedByTapatalk1362415325.631135.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1362415386.673276.jpg The insert is good for veggies, breakfast Jrow |

Don't get me wrong, I love grill marks as much as the next guy, but in reality, they don't mean anything. You want that nice crust that forms by searing the meat close to high heat. The grill marks may not show as well because the crust is nice and thick, but the flavor will be awesome.

Here is a pretty good low cost solution for you from Academy Sports. I have a set of these and I use them on my kettles. I switch between these for high heat and my normal Weber grates when doing low and slow. I like that I can use them for either the 22.5 or 18.5 inch kettles. Better jump on it quick because I just noticed that they are on clearance.

The thing i like about this one is that you only have to remove the inner part to put the chimney starter on and then dump the coals through the hole and replace the insert. Not sure what your budget is, but if you wanna get a really nice set, go with the craycort. I prefer grillgrates though. http://www.grillgrate.com/

+1 for Grill Grates. I keep three on my kettle and three on the gasser. When I do steaks on the kettle I keep the three panels stacked over the coals preheating, with the steaks on the indirect side for the reverse sear. When cooking steaks I put the raised rails facing down, gives me a great high temp flat top to get a great sear, protects from flare ups too. I've tried the reverse sear on the kettle with and w/o the Grill Grates and very much prefer using the Grill Grate.

#2 for GrillGrates. Best sear marks and they are aluminum, so lighter than taking cast iron for portability, plus wash them if you need to in the dishwasher, plus you can actually use them at a little lower temp than cast iron and still get great cooking. I have owned set for at least two years and use them on gassers as well as charcoal. Everyone that i have over for barbecue always comments on the grill marks....

#4 grill grates. We got a flat portable tailgate grill (think a smaller version of the Sam's event grill but only 4 burners) at HD on clearance a few years back. It always worked OK, but was still subject to flareups and such. Put GrillGates on and now its even hear all across, and NO flareups. And it gets better with each use
Cleanup is easy, just scrape down with the gratetool/ spatula! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk 2

Couple more options:
Set the grate on the Weber grate or just set the grill in the kettle (or use otherwise.) The bar spacing is tight so it's good for small stuff that would otherwise tend to escape into the fire. Another option is a that you can set on the Weber grate. It has tight spacing as well.
