i use four holes. One is 1 1/4. the rest i took a grinder to and they are roughly 1 1/2x1 1/2 in weird shapes. It works for me.

I have four 3/4" air intakes and 90% of the time I smoke with 2 of them open.

I use 2" intake and exhaust, I don't like to bend down to adjust either.

This is what apparently gives the PBC some of its oomph if you have been following some of the recent threads - a single 3"-ish intake.

Nope. Never. Why? I use a "diffuser plate" between the bottom and the burn basket.

If you are using a 55 gal drum, mine are 3/4 inch (four of them, but usually no more than 2 open). In my 90 gal, I went with 1 inch, but wish I had stayed with 3/4.
