Default LOVING the WSJ Gold! (heavy pr0n)

bought a wsj gold to make a mini wsm & have been grilling on it every day for a week or so; i absolutely love how this little grill works out (compared to my weber genesis gasser).

i honestly cant see myself going to the gasser for a cook anytime soon

Did the ash can mod and it holds 220-260 for 8+hrs (before I snuffed it) with room for more coal. Have yet to grill on it, only used as a smoker so far.

Nice. I'll be making it a mini soon. last two cooks (grilling) seems like the the heat starts to die down till the fire dies. seems like not getting enough oxygen but im thinking i might have gotten a bo-janky bag of kingsford blue.

The only thing better than a Weber charcoal grill is another Weber charcoal grill!

No you're right its tricky learning how to control the fire on the sjg and smokey joe platinum. It's most likely not your charcoal. Here's what has been working for me in the sjp which is just a little bigger version of the sjg which you have. I bank the coals to the vent side and leave the vent fully open as well as the other vent completely open. This seems to keep the coals burning without dying out. Hope this helps and enjoy your weber.

Due to the side vents the SJG doesn't have as good of air flow as the SJS and other Weber models. It still has the ability to make some great food, but don't plan on getting high searing temps from it. A couple of years ago I was on a job for six weeks living in a Holiday Inn Express that didn't have a grill available. A buddy of mine and I lived off my SJG the entire time. It took a little doing to manage the small grill space but there is plenty of room if you don't try to get too fancy. We only had one evening meal the entire time in a resturant. All the others were done on the SJG that I brought.

Turning it into a mini WSM was the best move I ever made because it was getting pretty limited use until then. Now I use my mini WSM more than his big brother.

I bought my WSJ as my first charcoal grill also. I've since bought a 22.5 OTS and a 22.5" WSM. You'll never want to go back to propane.
