i use these. i cut each "stick" into four pieces. i normally use 1 cutup piece. cheap and easy to use.

Although, truth be told, most every time I just grab a couple paper towels from the kitchen on the way out back to light up the grill and pour a little cooking oil on them.

However, if you want a cheaper alternative to the fire starter cubes, this is the best I can recommend.

Chris those are interesting. Not sure if I would have the time or patience to make them but they would be handy to have.

George I received some of these with a cooker..think it was the Hasty Bake. They worked great!

I've been known to cook with my weed burner when desperate.

Those are actually a bit of a relic from my days as Cubmaster with my sons scout pack. It really struck me for the simplicity and practicality. I made a chitload of them. They are super handy, they light right up. Same principle as a candle, only using cardboard for the wick, and with a much broader flame. They fit under a charcoal chimney well, light it up quick, and after a few minutes I just lift the chimney up off of the burner. Some ash gets down in there, but they've never become "gunked up" or anything. Once one burns's empty basically. Just scrape out whatever is left and refill.

I also use the Weber cubes in my chimney and for lighting my Kamado directly on the lump.

When I bought my CG Akorn last year I started using cotton balls saturated with 91% rubbing alcohol to light my lump. It's quick, easy, and readily available at your grocery store. I can have temps around @ 500 degrees within 15-20 minutes of lighting (just did this tonight for red hot beef kabobs).
