I am just about out of my KJ firestarters that were given to me when I bought the grill. I was wanting a more convenient and cheaper option to get. I see Lowes carries a Frontier and Weber paraffin wax fire starter. Are these safe to use with a Kamado cooker?
I know you are only suppose to use natural lump charcoal in them but wasn't sure about the fire starter.

I not certain. I use a chimney starter igniting a few coals and lift them onto the pile of unlit fuel using long tongs. A lot of the fancy pants items in the BBQ section simply to extract $ from your back pocket.
Good luck, |

I'm all but certain the Kamado Joe fire starters are rebranded Rutland Safe Light squares. They seem to vary in price from store to store, but the cheapest I've found them is $3.29 for a 24 pack at Ace Hardware.

I use the Weber cubes with my chimney. They are a good value, IMO.

I make my own. Paraffin is cheap and saw dust is easy to find. I fill up a 48-egg carton with saw dust, then melt the paraffin and pour it over the saw dust. Let it cool and cut the egg container into individual eggs and store them in a zip lock bag. My last batch I made about 150 of them and it cost me next to nothing.

Weber cubes are awesome. Also there's no safety related reason you're only supposed to use lump in a kamado. Its really just a matter of practicality. A kamado has a small firebox and the amount of ash made by briquettes would smother a fire long before the end of a long cooktime. Lump can do the long cooks without putting itself out.

I made paraffin starters back in my backpacking days, but the Weber cubes are so cheap, and already made, that I just use them, now. CD
