Default New project

My old man got this industrial warmer from the grocery store he works at about two years ago. Been sitting behind his shop and he said I could have it. I'm thinking like a backwoods/stumps setup. Anybody know of some build threads or ideas on which way to take this? Was planning on insulating the sides and I believe I'm going to need to make a new door also. Just had questions on how to get the firebox section figured out. Here is few shots of my fire box and chute on the stumps clone I built.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356725063.198893.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1356725109.698772.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1356725184.448908.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1356725218.163346.jpgthe chute is 6"x6" at top and 6"x8" at bottom. Fire box is 14" square and I think 7" tall.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356725323.569243.jpgthree inches of rock wool insulation because that's what I could get my hands on.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356725423.180603.jpgcompletely made of scrap metal my wife's uncle had laying around his farm. I had a LOT OF CLEAN UP TO DO once I got it built. Then coated the hole thing in Rhino Liner. Doesn't get hot on outside at all and never have to paint again.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356725574.082577.jpgi hope this helps. I'm sure it's not the best looking stumps clone, but it's a cooking machine.

Oh yeah, racks are 7" apart and made bottom 12" from the next one. Works good for turkeys and sittin chickens. All 5 racks comes to 25 square feet of cooking space. I have put 25 butts in it with no problem.

I have a friend with a CNC plasma cutter. It was cut from a piece of scrap. I have less than $100 in that build. I was a lucky man!!

Was it hard figuring the chute out? I was on the prairie BBQ site and was getting some ideas there. Would you recommend a gravity feed over a standard firebox/cook chamber?

The chute and firebox is most important part of that style cooker. Take your time and figure out the measurements of the box you already have and build from there. I don't have any Experiance cooking on a Backwoods style cooker so I can't say which is better. I have just over 70 cooks ( all logged in a notebook for reference) on stumps clone and the chute clogged on me 3 times. I caught it in time each time and hit top of charcoal with a fire poker to get it to fall. It will run for 23 hrs on about 16 pounds of RO lump. I also use an IQUE 110 on it. It holds temp the entire time.
