Default Koko Charcoal made from Coconut shells

I have been using Lazzari brand Hickory (Love it BTW) and decided to try some of this stuff made from Coconuts...Koko is the brand name. I would not recommend it. The Koko was very hard to light, smoked like crazy and smelled bad. It also doesn't seem to burn very hot either. I was going to grill some shrimp and from start to finish it took me two hours! I am tempted to just throw the remainder of the box in the trash! Not even worth mixing it in with the good stuff. Anyone else have a similar experience?

There is a lot of variation in coconut charcoal, maybe even more then lump and briquette.

I've had good success with this:

Almost no smoke profile, so you can really get the taste from whatever wood you use with it. A little harder to light, but I generally just light a small amount of lump in the chimney and put it on top of the coco char. The biggest drawback I've found is that it is hard to reuse the leftovers. It falls apart if you try to handle it after a burn.

i love the coshell briqquettes but its hard to find. i would like to find the stuff phubar uses.

Like Southstar Jeff said...there are alot of variations in coco briqs.

@MBshop:I use Ecobrasa...the US brand is Charcos: http://www.charcos.biz/
They're much more expensive than your normal briqs but they are way better.
Less ash,longer burning time,almost no smell and smoke...
