I also understand that its family oriented, but don't families drink beer?

I believe this is likely not the choice of the store. This is typically a liquor law issue.

It is a matter of license, on site can buy and drink on site but can't take it off, off site can buy it and take it off site but cannot drink it on site. If not enforced, the loss of the license is a definate and the money that goes with it, not to mention the fines.

It's a Bible belt thing. We had the "red solo cup" rule in Seymour Missouri's event too this year. Our team (all drinkers) thought this was one of the best events of the year. The organizers try to keep it a family event and don't want it turning into the American Royal Dark Side. There is no real enforcement so long as you drink like a grown up and not a frat boy.

Yes, it is. Essentially...

We don't want you to drink officially, and we don't want to see any booze at our event. But, we know you will drink *wink wink nudge nudge* so if you use a plastic cup to drink your booze, we will pretend you are drinking soda. The large red plastic cups made by Solo Plastics are the standard at most events for serving beer in.
