Default Like the sexual kind, food pron allows us to lust after taboo things

Just thought we should all take responsibility for America being over weight....

http://www.abc4.com/mostpopular/stor...IJDgvYH2Q.cspx

(Note: I've modified one word in the following article to 'pron' from what it originally was so as to not trigger any alarms. Moderators, please move to Woodpile if you feel a need to.)

The “food pron” problem

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Some say a picture is worth a thousand words and now it seems images of food may be worth a thousand calories. New research shows something called “food pron” may be causing people to overeat.

When you see it, you can hardly resist.

"If you’re ready for heart pulsing blood pounding ingestion, you're not ready enough for food pron," said an announcer on the Travel Channel’s No Reservations show.

That's right, food pron. It has nothing to do with using sex to sell food. It's simply images of food, shot in a way psychologists claim are tough to resist.

“Like the sexual kind, food pron allows us to lust after taboo things,” said Susan Albers, Psy.D., author of Eating Mindfully.

“They provoke a real emotional, and physical hunger response that can be tough to control,” said
Laura Martin, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the Univ. of Kansas Medical Center.

"Does that make you hungry?” Reporter Brian Carlson asked one person.

“Yah," they said.

"Ok that's nice," said another.

"Chocolate I love it!” said a third.

Clinical Psychologist Matt Woolley has his reservations about the research but agrees the concept is solid.

"Visual stimuli like an intriguing picture of a meal is going to trigger a drive in your brain to release endorphins, those endorphins make us feel good and increase the likely hood we're going to go after and find the image that we're seeking," said Matt Woolley, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist.

He should know. His wife is a cook, who has her own cookbook.

"In this picture you're not just focused on one bruschetta," said Janelle Woolley, Co-author of Simply De-Lite-Ful.

She took all the photos herself, and said there's definitely a style designed to draw you in.

"..and so in doing that you get up close, you focus in perhaps on a bite," said Woolley.

"Does that look like food pron to you?” Carlson asked one person.

“Absolutely," he said.

Researchers claim the groups most easily enticed already have a food weakness. But if you stare at a photo long enough that doesn't mean you won't develop one of your own.

"You want to go eat that right now?” Carlson asked another bystander.

“Oh ya," they said.

"Gotta have the chocolate now!" said another bystander.

One other interesting thing about this is Belgian researchers found that looking at photos of food were even more powerful than looking at the food itself.

Good read. And i agree. That's why I am working on my 'plating' at home. A big pile of meat tastes good, but I want it to look good too.

I don't buy it, just like real pron does not make me want to have sex, looking at food pron is not what made me fat. I was fat before the prevalence of food pron. I will say, as a teenager, sex pron gave me a false sense of what was really available on a regular basis (and somethings have never been available to me). Perhaps that is why food pron is bad, as I have been able to indulge in almost everything I have seen.

Amen Brother. I've given up smoking. Just give me the food. Let me have that.

Yep, I gave up smoking too about a year ago (but not the dipping LOL) but be damned if I'ma give up good meat! I even mix extra hard white beef fat I get at Whole Foods into my meat cuts when I grind it for burgers.

I think you can enjoy food that classifies as pron as long as you do it in moderation. Every night might be a bit excessive, but I guess that depends on your weight and age too. Glad I'm 24 and 160 pounds.

If you choke the chicken before the brisket arrives, the brisket will get real mad.

Don't ask me how I know that...

I watched Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives last week. Guy went to some place that was making cheese stuffed burgers, in particular a Brie stuffed burger.

Yep, the next day my wife showed up with the ingredients, and I didn't hesitate to put it all together.

I'm a victim man, I think I'll sue consumerism as a whole.

My career right now is to not help people stay thin. I have a couple salads on the menu, but they are diversions.

I'll take responsibility. I make people fat!
