my site has brethren listed in a couple places. i need to talk to phil about dropping a banner or something on there also if that would be ok if there is something pre-made for that sort of use.

Subscription or not, live link or not, if it's in www.com format, it needs a return link. The reasoning is fair. For the amount of exposure that someone's link gets on this site, we ask that this site get the same exposure over on your page as well. We also ask that the link be on the landing page and not buried somewhere in a corner. It should be as prominent as your link appears under "each and every" post that is entered here. Pretty reasonable request, no?

My links go to my blog and I have the Brethren site listed on the right side bar with the other links, but I went ahead and added it to the specific pages for the UDS and the Mini WSM since I am linking those pages directly from my signature...
