Default Restoration Progress

Thought I would post some Pron of the project.

Putting the Firebox back together, not going to be pretty.

Bottom of base had hairline crack, used a Dremel tool to notch out the crack. Leaving the original weep hole open.

1st filled the crack with JB Weld yesterday then today coated most of the bottom. Hope this was right.

Cart is a mess, It looks like 2 of the wheels were buried in dirt for a long time. 1/2 done prepping.

I have a feeling the "weep hole" was someones attempt to keep the crack on the bottom from spreading, but to no avail. That is common for them to crack at the vent. Main reason to use no more than 30 briquettes at a time.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but any paint that I have tried to cover JB Weld has not adhered and flakes off rather quickly. I even tried roughing it up and it won't take.

I have repainted this twice after the initial base coat of BBQ Black paint and it still flakes off in the areas repaired with epoxy.

Toss the charcoal grate and get either a Lodge cast iron trivet or a BGE iron grate.

Good luck! You are off to a great start, keep us posted on the progress!

Coming along, good thing I have a Makita and a drill with a wire wheel.

Curing the Firebox cement, went from 170º to 500º over a 2 hour period. Do not do this and let the wife see.

Rough but seems sound.

Cart is primed, got the old Castor's out and went with 3" replacements with brakes.

Have a lot of items in progress right now, biggest holdup is waiting for the paint to dry.

Nice work!

I never thought to take pics of me curing the firebox in the oven.....because I can still hear my wife screaming at me for doing it in the first place!

Thanks Brian,

This sure is a lot of work to get this back into shape. I hope it is all worthwhile.

Got the Primer done. The final color may be too much but there is no turning back now.

Default Nice Score

It almost looks like an "original" kamado brought from the orient. You might be able to fit a BGE firebox and firering in there when you restore it.

I think this project is much more interesting to me than the rest of you all.

Coming down to the wire on the unveiling. Everything is still in pieces until Saturday or Sunday. Prep and the Painting is really taking some time.

I will give you a preview of the color scheme before the finished results. I guess that is, if anyone would like to see...

Upper damper and Top.

I am interested Terry, but, I need you to complete the thing and post some food. What do you do all week that is slowing you down?

Thanks for the support. The patching, prepping and painting of the base and dome was the most time consuming. I needed to wait 48 hours between coats and did 2 coats of final color.

Then there was so much rust and crud on the metal parts that took a lot of time also. I know that the prep is the most important part so I did spend a lot of time on that.

I have about 25 hours labor into this beast. Being unemployed is making it go faster or it may have taken a few weeks to get to this point.
