Waiting for a chicken story from RonL???

There is no story from my point of view. I'd really like to talk to the judges and hear their story, however. We have absolutely no clue as to why they hated our chicken. I've cooked some crappy chicken in the past and this was not crappy chicken. It may not have been first place chicken, but is certainly wan not DAL chicken. I guess I should take some satisfaction that Lotta Bull's chicken was way down there, too.

RonL did the judges have the decency to give you score cards? No need to share results, just curious.

Congrats to all who walked. Ron...maybe the judges WANTED crappy chicken :) j/k

I'm curious about the judging too. I don't think that they had 100% certified judges, but the scores for everything and everybody seemed pretty low to me. There were some great teams, so I pretty sure that there was alot better product turned in than the scores relfected. I was really happy with my chicken and ribs and got 20th and 30th with them. I was super disappointed in my pork and brisket and got 12th with both of those (I really thought I'd be around 30th place with both of them).

1st in ribs then 41st in pork. Ron I feel your pain, your chicken was our pork.

On a positive note :clap2: It was great to see both of you in Steeleville!

This is one of the reasons we haven't continued going to Steeleville, the judging seems pretty erratic.

This is one of the reasons we haven't continued going to Steeleville, the judging seems pretty erratic.

I went last year....didn't go back for that very reason.
Ron, Just talk to "Doc" Richardson, I think he has been shut out there for the past three years...not a single call in the main entries.

Just a little note on Steeleville. Out of 43 teams times six judges for a total of 258 pieces of chicken to cross the judges tables, there were only 6 scores of 999 .About the same in the other 3 catagories, ribs 9 entries, pork 6 entries, and brisket 8 entries. This is a fun contest, but with this track record, I can't say we will be back next year.

My chicken just happened to get one of those 999. I also got a 858 and a 777 at the same table. I did have fun this weekend, but that was due the fact this contest was less than an hour away from my home and I had a few friends that were able to come and hang out for a couple days. I know it is probably hard to get a solid, consistant, certified, 100% percent group of certified judges at a contest this time of year. The organizers seemed like they were trying to me, but it never came together for them. I was really disappointed after I got home and started to think about it. I turned in product that I and everyone around me thought was sub-par and almost got calls with it. I also turned in some pretty quality stuff and got really mixed results from the judges. Keep in mind that I'm not a certified judge, have never organized a contest and this is only my 3rd time competing. The only reason I'm even thinking about this as much as I am is because the same organizer is trying to put on contest less than an hour away form my home in September with a $70,000 prize pool based on an entry fee of $350 with 200 teams. I would like to think they could pull it off, but after this weekend I have my concerns. It has ALOT of potential. They already have 250 camping spots with individual electric and water reserved a world class shooting complex (it really is world class) in Sparta, IL. This had been all here-say until last weekend and now all they have are a few forms that they gave the teams at Steeleville and no website up yet. I hope they can get thier act together and pull it off, but I would like to think that should have 100% certified judges and volunteers that are familiar with the KCBS rules. I found out today(by a couple people visiting me) that there were two teams near me that used propane torches to (add color) to thier chicken and ribs. This is not just a rant about judges and organizers. I could just tell that it wasn't ran all that great. I turned in two things that a few people and myself were above average and got poor, inconsitant scores. I also turned in two things that I thought were fairly poor efforts and almost got calls with them. Like I said, it's only my 3rd contest and I'm not a judge, but the other two contests I've competed in were ran well and every product I turned in scored about what I thought they would after I closed the box.
