Hi
I have painted my smoker 6 coats and chamber with 8.
After I wased it out and wire brushed everything even the inside but no paint in there. There is minor rust but not like the stuff that sticks up and seems terrible. The fire chamber grate has some also as well as the cook chambers cook grates but does not seem like like brownish type. I can feel it coming up under the protective cover it has on there. Otherwise it looks ok. The charcoal grate inside the cool chamber used for coal if a reg bbq is in store also has rustbut again nothing crazy. Wire brushed everything except the cook grates. Is it safe to cook?
I was planning on coating the main chamber to 4-500 deg with cooking oil to season it. But will not put any grates in except the charcoal one. Below the charcoal grate is a pan to fit it but ill layer that with tin foil.
Hope you umder stand what im saying but basically.....
Is it safe to grill/smoke with minor rust in all chambers amd on the main grates (if not bad. Couple spots)???
Thanks

If you have given it a good wire brushing inside, and oiled it down, season it and cook away, same goes for the grates even if they still look a little rusty.

I agree..... brush it and apply cooking oil and turn up the heat. Seasoning the inside (like a cast iron fry pan) is best for inside...

lol
thanks.
i heard to put the fire in the fire box and get the cook chamber to 400 deg. id have to get the box to like 600 then. should i just put the fire in the main box?
i painted it sunday, monday, tuesday and last coats to fire box wednesday.
let it sit for thursday and cleaned the grates. was going to season it today (friday) then smoke or grill ribs saturday.

i will also be getting the food safe silicone caulk from bbqgaskets.com to seal up the fire box and the smoke spout in about a week. so im sure next time i smoke after saturday itll be a bit better since the heat will stay in. trying to get a gasket to fit my smoker also but that will have to wait.
as for the socks. i snuck out while wife was picking a movie. this stuff is important. lol

You should be fine good scraping some Pam or oil of some kind fire it up and burn that in and if I want u can take an onion cut in half and rub it all over the inside it helps with seasoning
