If there is a thread on this please accept my apologies and send me in the right direction. The wives of our cooking team members are wanting to enter into the various side dish categories. My question is... What is allowed on presentation? I've heard it is completely "open" but I'd like to know for sure. What might be an example of a good turn in. I'm not asking for secrets, just examples . Thanks Brethren

Side dishes are not KCBS categories, so the rules are up to the competition organizer and will probably be different for every competition.

Ask the organizer if the entries are to be presented blind, in the standard box, or if the category is open -- from your description above it sounds like it is, but check with the organizer to make sure and to determine if there are any size limitations (i.e., 14" x 18" x 12", or some limiter like "able to be carried by one person").

To give you some ideas for open entries, here are a few we've done over the years:

Not a side, but an Anything But, for an idea of tray staging:

Potato salad, minimalist presentation:

Beans (this one is wayyy old!):

Thank you very much. Our next comp is Lenexa so I'll do some investigation.
