I ask because I just got back from a backyard competition where I did very well in all 3 categories (1st in ribs, 2nd in brisket and 3rd in shoulder). I was very happy to do well, but the biggest compliment I got was from an elderly gentleman who approached our stand (we had to serve the festival attendees as well). He sampled all three of the meats and didn't say a word. I figured I had struck out on all counts. After he was done, he asked my sister who was serving who the cook was. My sister pointed at me and with the help of his daughter, he made his way behind the table and walked up to me. I stood up and he looked me square in the eye and shook my hand. He said "Son, I was stationed at Randolph AFB near San Antonio TX during WWII. When the boys and I had leave, we would head up to Lockhart to eat as much barbecue as we could before we had to be back to the barracks. Now I left Randolph in 1945 and haven't been back since mind you. Your brisket was the closest I have ever had to what we ate in Lockhart and it brought back some of the happiest memories of my life. I just wanted to thank you." I have to admit I teared up a bit (a lot). I told him it would be an honor to cook for him again and any time he wanted more I would make it happen and gave his daughter my email and number. My sister is retired from the Marines. She saluted him and he straightened as much as his body would allow and saluted back and then they left. They could have kept the trophies and the money from the event, that judges opinion meant more to me than the guys sitting in the room with my turn in boxes. Without a doubt it was my biggest bbq victory ever.

Now that is a compliment! Well done. Very good story. Thanks for sharing.

while it doesn't come close to your compliment, the best I've had was a guy I worked with offering to front the cash to start up a bbq "stand/shack". if i'd been more financially secure at the time, i'd probably have done it.

Having people enjoy your food is one of the great things about cooking. To bring fond memories to a WWII Vet is priceless.

I had the 10 yr son of a Co-Worker (whom I did a cpl Pork Shoulder Roasts for) write me a note and tell me I was in his Top 10 of Chefs..........LOL. :-D

I got nothin' close to DeepElemQue.

That's a hell of a story. Sounds like the four of ya all got blessed.

While nothing like yours, mine is when my dad told me that he believed that I had surpassed him as the best bbqer in the family

I can't top that story, but I really did have some folks come up and tell me

"those were the best pig eyeballs I've ever eaten"

and

"that was the best pig head we've ever eaten"

from a La Caja China cookout for a friend and his guests.

Huntin Smoke & I made BB ribs for the people at work. 3 Guys that often eat a Pappys Smokehouse in St Louis said that our ribs were better than Pappys. There wives said that our ribs were the best that they had ever eaten.

I got nothing on the original. That's way awesome.

My answer is kinda different. Although I have had numerous people say very nice things, I don't remember them. What I really remember is how people act... when they eat my q. I don't like being around people when they eat any of my food actually. I like being off to the side where they think I am not around looking. That is when you get a honest reaction, when they think no one is looking. When body motions get dramatic, eye rollings, head shaking... when wives start hitting their husbands in the shoulder or gut.... that's when I know I've hit a home run. That has actually happend more than a handful of times. A "why can't you make ribs this good" reaction. Those are my favorite "compliments".

I've had a couple over the years similar, but I dont want to compare. They're each priceless, as was yours; PRICELESS.

Super!

I may have gotten a small case of goosebumps reading that. Bravo! :eusa_clap

Great story by the OP...

My favorite complimemt is that dead silence when everyone at the table shuts up and are collectively savoring my cooking. Ok, there will be a few moans, lip smacks and groans, but when you can silence a rowdy crowd with food - you did something right!!! :-D:-D:-D
