Took delivery today on a CL found Brinkman. Initial impression is that it's actually a very compact unit. Long, but narrow and not tall. Also, speaking of tall, seems a bit low to the ground. Here are some initial considerations. Any input or comment is welcomed.
-Owner said temp gauge is broken. Looks like Brinkman still stocs them for $40, should I stay with Brinkman gauge or is there something better and or cheaper to use?
-Rust! Does this look like a candidate for sandblasting? I have an aircompressor and attachments for blasting seem reasonable enough
-Heat deflector. I assume I'll need to do something with the area between the firebox and cook area.
-rehab the burner. New hose right? Anything else? Anyone know a good vendor for hoses and such?

It looks like you could get away without sand blasting but you'll need to do a lot of wire brushing and sanding. Powder coating instead of painting would be nice but probably expensive. A new grate, baffle and tuning plates would be good also. You might want to bring the exhaust stack down to grate level too.
 
Update: Tested a jar of Naval Jelly to remove the rust. Marginal results. I think I will try and rent a sandblaster.

Question, I want to get that 30,000btu burner operating. Anyone know the psi requirement for the propane regulator? is 20psi the standard? Brinkman said they don't support it any more.
 
Get 2 new temp gauges and put them lower in door near cooking surface one on each side of handle - just leave old one in for decoration cuz that's all it was good for to begin with....

Maybe make some tuning plates, baffle and extend Stack to grate......

Get TelTru or River Country Thermos on Amazon... Id just pay to get it sandblasted then wash and season it right away.

look into a tel-tru thermometer, i'd get a bag of lump charcoal and light a big fire throughout the whole thing. After it's cooled, see how bad it is. my guess, a thorough cleaning, wire wheel and some sanding, couple coats of high temp paint, and it'll be rusty again in a year.

Mine is 50543. Seller said he had it 12 years, dunno if he got it new.

This morning I picked up a $48 Sears Sandblaster. Hope it does the job.

UPDATE: So far, the $48 Sandblaster blows. And not in a good way. Gonna try a finer silica type sand and see if that helps.

I would slather on the Naval Jelly and let it go to work. Might take a few applications

I did a rusty boat trailer that looked a lot worse than that and it worked pretty good, saved a lot of work

and I am jealous. great find there!!
 
As far as sand blasting goes, you got a local body shop or custom metal shop near by? They can probably sand blast and powder coat for you for a small fee. Or just sand blast and then you can paint with high temp. Too bad you already put $48 into the home sand blaster. Too late to take it back?
 
I would take it to a person that does sand blasting for a living .. After you get it done take it home and paint it with high temp paint . Then put wood of chioce . and re season it . Heck you only have a couple of c notes it it . Do it right the first time
 
Loctite Rust Converter works much better than Naval Jelly. I have used it many times. It converts the rust to a paintable surface. Just do some light sanding to smooth it out.
 
UPDATE 2 : Rehab for Brinkman has temporarily been postponed in order to rehab the Sears Sandblaster so I can return it... Thing doesn't work for crap. It's a simple thing, I don't see how you could hook it up wrong if you wanted to. Even tried the fine silica blasting sand. Lots of bad reviews on this unit on the web.

I'll ask around a few body shops tomorrow but expect I'll end up with the naval jelly/loctite solution. A wheel and elbow grease would take months to do right.

Btw loctite and Naval Jelly are the same I think. Mine has both names on it.

Thanks for the links, I know there are sandblasters here, it's more the issue of me not wanting to pay what they'll probably want -- knowing Santa Barbara prices.
 
I wonder what it costs? I got a Old Bandera that could use a good sandblasting.

the Naval Jelly I use as the Loctite name on it, I think they now own the brand
 
I'm not trying to highjack your thread but wanted to post pic's of my recent Brinkmann Cimarron rehab. Mine is not the deluxe version. I completed the rehab about 2 weeks ago. Had it sand blasted, it was as rusty as yours if not worse. I added a deflector plate, charcoal basket and replaced the wire shelf on front with a cedar shelf. For the paint I used high temp black then coated with high temp gloss. The inside looks like I painted it but that's just the seasoning oil. Oh yeah, I also used high temp felt (BGE style) to seal my doors.

I wish you the best in your rehab project, I had a lot of fun with mine. I really like the smoke flavor the offset. It also holds heat very well.
