Ideally, 3/4" 9 gauge, flattened.

Remember to bend it the opposite way that I did (see pic below)... make the diamonds point upward instead of around the basket... unless you're in for a workout! It's 5 times easier to bend that way. Other than that, you may want to check out my video (in my sig) on building a charcoal basket (and I think Norco has one too), so you can at least learn what NOT to do.
