I'm guessing these are a regional thing because I keep stumbling across them from various manufacturers on Facebook 'BBQ' groups. Do they work well? How do you start and feed wood to them? Do they work well?

Who around here uses or used one? Did you like it? Why or why not?

There’s the long chute you use to feed wood and drop a fire starter. It’s similar to my Roccbox pizza oven.
 
The 'rocket stoves' I'm familiar with use camping butane cylinders! :-D

Looks a bit heavy for a backpack but, for a 'prepper' it might be the next BIG thing.

Hmm, I might have to try one out with a Dutch Oven sometime.
 
I've come across variants here in the mid-west (so it's not just a South-East thing, or it's actually been migrating the last few years), but yeah, it's basically a self feeding rocket stove.

as for portability, had a guy in my son's Scout troop actually engineer and build a collapsible one for his hiking pack. I wish I had pictures of it, but it was 6-7 years ago.
 
It a rocket stove, my welding class, have build a lot of them, I have two we built, very easy too build, if you set a Brinks or a similar type on top you can bbq, use very little wood , but you have too feed it often, also can use charcoal in it, it a fun stove too play with, my student love making them

I first ran across them as a solution for third-world countries where fuel is scarce. They can be made using steel, bricks, blocks, and even baked mud.

these look amazing but the cost I have seen them for based on the materials involved is odd.
