When you want old school Lexington NC BBQ, skip all the touristy joints and head down the backroads to Cook’s BBQ!

Here is your guide to legit Lexington NC bbq.

1. It’s Pork shoulder
2. There is a stack of hickory wood easily visible out back

3. You can smell the bbq cooking long before you can see the restaurant

4. They offer dipt (on the side) along with their bbq (not sauce, but dipt)

5. It’s chopped pork, not pulled (I like coarse chopped, but you have to ask for it)

6. Hushpuppies are part of the meal

7. While you may think it’s a hamburger bun, in these parts it’s called a roll

Awesome. Best pork bbq I've ever had was from NC. I love that carport wood shelter. I'm eyeballing one myself. Open ends, closed sides.

So you just happened to drive past this place and decided to stop in? Looks great. Saved in Google Maps. :thumb:

Haha
It’s certainly not on the way to anything (other than great BBQ), but it’s only minutes out of town (Lexington) down hwy 8.
It is near high rock lake though which has some excellent striper fishing

Bookmarked! A North Carolina BBQ trip is very, very high on the list of things I wanna do. Once in a while I wonder if I'm getting tired of pulled pork, and every time I eat it, I realize how much I love it. I've realized by now I'll never get tired of it. I'd love to have some from any of the classic NC spots.

Thanks for the post. I just drove by Lexington last weekend. I was thinking Honeymonks, but we were 'tween meals and still had another 10 hours to drive. I'll try to make it to Cooks next time. My wife is becoming a hushpuppy aficionado, which is really bad for the keto.

Embarrassed to admit that I've never been to the Carolinas. It's high on our travel list when we retire (hopefully next year). Like Greg mentioned, this is a great thread to bookmark.
