Paraffin Wax fire starters?

I love the Weber cubes but now I'm looking forward to making some from scratch. Thanks guys!

It is fun to try, especially if you have kids you can make them with. It's a science project. I don't make them anymore, but I am glad I know how to make them.

You can also purchase candle wax at most craft stores too!

You have to be careful with candle wax. The good stuff is beeswax, not paraffin wax. You have to read the label to be sure what you are buying. Beeswax is fantastic for candles, terrible for fire starters.

Tell me more if you can. Where can you buy the raw material? Like the paraffin that you melt? Can you even purchase saw dust? Any particular brand of paraffin? Thanks!

Seems like everyone gave you the info you need.

My neighbor is a wood worker and i go fill up a garbage bag full of sawdust and he thanks me for taking it off his hands.

The parrafin wax i use i get is the same you can with. Im out right.now and dont remember the brand.
Between my four kids and my sisters three we go through enough eggs that im never short or egg cartons. I can make dozens of them and not feel guilty about being impatient and using 2 or 3 to get my fire going.

Just be careful melting it. I do it outside on my gasser in a coffee can. It is flammable so just be careful, keep all water away from it and you'll keep all your eyebrows.

Yup, I use 'em. I place them under the charcoal grate and open the vents. About 5 minutes later, I got a roarin' fire. In another 5 the meat goes on!

Am I the only one that can taste an off taste when using the Weber cubes? We quit using them because of it. Now I use the "hair dryer of doom" aka Looftlighter.

We use the Weber pariffin cubes as well at comps. We just strategically place 2-3 within the pile of unlit charcoal and light them. In short order the whole pile is rollin.

I still go old school with newspaper for the chimney at home though.

I don't put the food on until long after the cubes are gone. I've never noticed any off flavor.

This is what you're looknig for...in my opinion. Cheap and simple, and lasts for MANY uses. I always used paraffin to make these.

Although, truth be told, most every time I just grab a couple paper towels from the kitchen on the way out back to light up the grill and pour a little cooking oil on them.

However, if you want a cheaper alternative to the fire starter cubes, this is the best I can recommend.

i use these. i cut each "stick" into four pieces. i normally use 1 cutup piece. cheap and easy to use.

Chris those are interesting. Not sure if I would have the time or patience to make them but they would be handy to have.

George I received some of these with a cooker..think it was the Hasty Bake. They worked great!

I've been known to cook with my weed burner when desperate. http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=106784

Those are actually a bit of a relic from my days as Cubmaster with my sons scout pack. It really struck me for the simplicity and practicality. I made a chitload of them. They are super handy, they light right up. Same principle as a candle, only using cardboard for the wick, and with a much broader flame. They fit under a charcoal chimney well, light it up quick, and after a few minutes I just lift the chimney up off of the burner. Some ash gets down in there, but they've never become "gunked up" or anything. Once one burns up...it's empty basically. Just scrape out whatever is left and refill.

When I bought my CG Akorn last year I started using cotton balls saturated with 91% rubbing alcohol to light my lump. It's quick, easy, and readily available at your grocery store. I can have temps around @ 500 degrees within 15-20 minutes of lighting (just did this tonight for red hot beef kabobs).

Weber cubes for many years (7) and have never noticed an off taste.
