i got a friend that has a whole tree cut down and cut into 4 ft lengths. just wondering what kind of wood it is?? the best part is that it is free.

I think I'd pass on it. We have a ton of them around here and don't even use them for firewood because of the amount of sap in them.
I don't know if it would be that good for smoking but then again, I've never tried it. Maybe another brother can offer some other words of wisdom. If I did use it for smoking though, I'd make sure it had completely dried up first.

Stay away. I cut down 15 sweet-gums in my yard and after 5 gallons of diesel could not get them to properly burn. Had to haul them off.

They're great to grow Shiitake mushrooms on, but they suck as a smoking wood.
