Char-Broil smokers recalled
18,450 model number 07701413 smokers were recalled.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, when the temperature setting is low, the smoker's hose/valve/regulator (HVR) assembly does not allow sufficient gas to flow, causing the flame to extinguish. Gas continues to flow and build up inside the smoker. If the smoker is then reignited the build-up of propane gas can cause an explosion that bursts the smoker's door open

Yup, and they're made in China... go figure.
 
I think the main problem is the gas. :p

Now why would anyone have gas in a smoker?

This was an honest post regarding consumer safety. Not a gas bashing thread.
 
I used a gas smoker for years. I can see why they are banned from competition. They produce the most consistant product. You can also control the smoke in a manner that you can't with pellet, charcoal or sticks. Plus the price is far less for the unit and fuel.
I was looking at a new gas smoker (I think it was a Char Broil) just last weekend. It was not wide enough for brisket.
 
Sadly a recall of that magnitude means most likely there has been some deaths.

Actually NO!

Five people have received, burns, cuts or concussion from the malfunction of a gas regulator.
 
No gas appliance should ever be considered safe unless it is equipped with a thermocouple. No flame, no gas. This is huge oversight by the CPSC.

Cheaper for the manufacture, till the lawsuits start rolling in.

In the mean time, people will get hurt.
