I'm about to be in the market for a freezer for the casa. Any suggestions on a brand and things I should consider when out shopping for one?

I suggest an upright. Better for your back and easier to find things.

I would go for an upright. Also think the same way about a freezer as you would a smoker. Buy it bigger than you think you will need.

I picked up this freezer for $400 from a business closing. Lots of space. It was a steal!

Yep... get an upright. I had a chest and it drove me crazy. I picked up a very clean upright off of CL for $100 or so.

And thank you for the advice fellas, I'm going to check Craig's List until I can find just the right one. I agree with y'all that upright is the right way to go.
You can also keep an eye on your local Lowe's and Home Depot. We got a great deal on a returned upright, that's paid for itself in less than a year by stocking up on meat when it's on sale. We got the extended warranty, that paid for itself with the seal started to come off the door.

Same here, and in my opinion this is the best way to go. The new freezers are much more efficient and will use much less energy, so you save two ways. Also, the extended warrenty is a real life saver [though I am not usually a proponent of extended warrentys]. I found that the compressors on the new generation freezers are not built for repair. I got a warrenty with full replacement clause.
As to brand, doesn't matter what name is on it, they all come from the same factory.

Agree with what these fellows all said. I have 2 upright freezers to help keep things sorted. Keep your freezer full and it will not use much energy.

One thing a long time rancher taught me was to buy "Non frost free" type of freezer. In combination with food sealer bags some food will last years.
Frost free freezers have heaters in the walls that cycle to keep ice from forming, but it also dries everything out (freezer burn) in the freezer. Had a box type for years but I did switch to upright because of forgetting what was buryed below the first level. Bonus is non frost free are usually cheaper at Homer and Lowes.
