So what do you think? I found a place in Jersey that sells recycled 55 gallon drums for $12. No idea what was in it but since it came from Jersey, you have to expect the worst. No epoxy lining. No paint on the outside.

Seems this place recycles old drums. They clean them out and heat them to 1600 degrees to burn out any contamination. When done they are repainted and sold as non food drums. I can understand the non food drum aspect but I would think 1600 degrees should burnoff any problems.

Whaddya think?
 
I'm thinkin' if I didn't see it burn personally...I'd burn it out again! Especially to a drum from Jersey! :twisted: (I've been to the shipyards in Bayonne)
 
Spray some bleach on it, that kills anything, right?

If there is something other than nuclear waste that cannot be destroyed by 1600* burn, I would hate to get close to it!
 
Just be sure to check them in a dark room, you don't want to get any of the ones that are glowing.:eek: That might be how they got to 1600*:rolleyes:

They should be fine but I would still do a burn in them just because.:wink:
 
The way I look at it, it's like teflon. I'm not getting rid of the pans, I'm already contaminated, what could a little extra chemical waste from Jersey do to me.
 
I say go for it. 1600 degrees should be hot enough to burn everything out of there. I'd kill to get some drums with no liners...
 
If they have been treated after the burn out with rust inhibitor, you'll have to burn it out again. (Which I would do anyway just to be safe)
 
Tried to get a couple of friends interested so the drive to Jersey would payoff. They're followers and want to see how it turns out first. Found a new drum at a petroleum place that is unlined. They quoted me $55 but when I got there they added a $20 deposit. Already tasting my first UDS brisket, I paid the $75 and drove off grumbling but happy. A buddy had a drum cutter and I sliced the top off and plan to use a Weber top. The inside is sparkling. Had to do a little grinding to get the top to fit perfect. All in all not too bad and I'm off and running.

Sad thing is it would have cost me the same price and three hours if I drove to Jersey for one recycled drum. So for the $75, I got a sparkling clean drum 10 minutes from my house and my UDS is almost done. Sometimes you have to pay to play. Just the time saved was worth it.
