Has anyone tried potassium salt as an alternative to regular table salt? I cannot consume much sodium in my diet. I've gotten used to food without salt but at times I can definitely tell that I need a bit of it to make the food taste a better. So I may decide to gives this potassium salt a try as it is suppose to have no sodium at all.

I have tried Morton's lite salt to try and bring down my intake of sodium - part of an overall plan to lose some weight. Morton's lite salt is potassium something or another salt.

In short, I would rather lick a tire than use Morton's lite salt. Hopefully there are other good sodium substitutes that I haven't tried.

be very careful with potassium, if you have any heart related problems. Excess potassium with create problems with heart rythm.

DO NOT use potassium salts as equal replacement for Sodium. Just because it's a "Salt" does not mean that it tastes the same a table salt. It has very different properties and a very different role in cellular biochemisty. Use and administration of potassium is very carefully managed in medical environments. If you use it at home, you seriously run the risk of meeting people from those professions.

Hope that is clear....

Cheers!

Thanks for the heads up everyone, indeed this product can be very dangerous. I can't believe this stuff is on grocery shelves. Here is an excerpt from wiki.

"Potassium chloride is used as the third of a three-drug combination in lethal injection. Additionally, KCl is used (albeit rarely) in fetal intracardiac injections in second- and third-trimester induced abortions"

It may be best for a mod to delete this thread. I don't want anyone even attempting to use this product because of my fault.

There are many things which, when injected intravenously will kill you, but when eaten will nourish you.

Consider the fact that a key ingredient in both Pedialyte and Gatorate is potassium.
Recall also, that fruits and vegetables are typically high in potassium.

There is some good info in supplemental KCl on this page:

Always a good idea to consult a doctor for guidance on a treatment plan.
Can anyone use AlsoSalt? Persons having medical conditions should consult their physician before using a salt substitute.http://www.alsosalt.com/nutritionfacts.html

Yes, correct about the Gatorade: But Gatorade is for Electrolyte REPLACEMENT and the potassium levels are so low as to be safe for consumpion by most people even if they are not exercising, and if they do not have Renal impairment.

Thats all fine. What is not fine is thinking that the stuff is "Salt" and sprinkling it on your food. Specifically in THIS case where a member has been told he needs to cut down on salt, most likely BECAUSE of existing renal impairment, and using ANY additional Potassium would be many times more dangerous than a good helping of Sodium....

Hope thats just as clear!

Cheers!

Thanks to you all, I rather be safe than sorry. I have no idea why anyone would recommend this crap knowing the potential side effects. **** that ****. No salt for me.

I ask a moderator, please delete this thread as it can be potentially dangerous.

sea salt is better for you than table salt except for the lack of iodine. for me, I don't need as much to season any dish. it still has sodium, but it is all natural and has more minerals, not refined like table salt.
